KILMER CORNER STORE VOLUNTEER GUIDELINES

Thank you for agreeing to volunteer at the Kilmer Student Store! It is great fun working at the school in the midst of the middle school mayhem. You are providing a great service to the students and you have an opportunity to observe what goes on during your child's day.

Store hours:

The store is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during school lunch hours (10:10 am to 12:30 pm.)  The store will be open everyday from 9/8 until 9/18.

First time volunteers:

On your first day volunteering, it’s a good idea to get there a little early so that you can read through the instructions and familiarize yourself with the cash register and the store itself.  Two people work together each day and it is best if at least one of the two is an experienced worker. We will monitor the sign-ups and will make sure someone is there who has worked before (we'll recruit a third person or Charlene or Stephanie will work with you). 

Before working in the store:

IMPORTANT: Print these instructions to bring with you. YOU WILL NEED THE SAFE CODE. The office does not have the code!  Please keep the code secured. See below.

• Contact the person working with you to confirm their attendance. See contact information on the online schedule below.
• If you can't make your scheduled time, please contact another parent and find your replacement. 

Opening procedure: 

• Go to the front office, sign-in and get a volunteer badge.
• Ask the secretary for the Kilmer Store safe key and sign it out using the log book in the school office.
• Ask the secretary to open the store.
• Go to school store (exit the office, and go straight down H Hall, keeping the cafeteria on your left.  Just past the cafeteria double doors you will see the door to the school store.)
• Turn on the lights and then the cash register (turn the key on top right of register from OFF to REG). The cash drawer should be open when empty.  If not, push the large square green CA/AT/NS key to open the cash drawer.
• The cash register is to be used primarily for adding-up purchases and for sorting & storing money received. It is not necessary to track your sales or keep the register receipt. 
• The cash box is located in the safe that is located on the floor behind the store counter. Open the safe by inserting the key, entering the code and then turning the key. The safe code will be provided to you on the Volunteer Instructions sheet.  Move cash from cashbox into the register & close the drawer.
• Open door into cafeteria and hang out the OPEN sign (located under the counter) in the holder on the right top of the doorframe.
• Move the candy and any buckets or containers from under the counter to the top of the counter.

Closing Procedure:

• Take down OPEN flag and place behind counter.  Close and lock doors to cafeteria and hallway.  Hit large square green CA/AT/NS key to open register.  Empty cash register money into the cashbox and leave empty cash register drawer open. 
• Turn register key to the right from REG to OFF.
• Put the candy or any buckets/containers back underneath the counter.
• Place the cashbox back into the safe and relock the safe door by turning the key.
• Pull the store door closed (the knob should still be locked, if it isn’t, remind the secretary to lock the store door ASAP).
• Sign-in the safe key.
• Don’t forget to sign yourself out! 

Crowds and stealing: The administrative staff in the cafeteria can help you at any time. If you catch stealing or other bad behavior, contact them immediately! The store can get crowded, especially during the first two lunches.  It’s a good idea to have one of the volunteers watching the kids as they wander the store because we’ve had some problems with stealing in the past.  If the store gets too crowded you can send some students out into the cafeteria and request that they return in a few minutes. The faculty strongly discourages loitering and hanging out in the store. They want us to be vigilant about this issue.

Making change: Within reason, you can make change for students. Make sure you are not depleting the cash beyond what is needed to make change for purchases. This is usually more of an issue on Mondays.

Restocking: Extra stock is located under the counter and on some of the store shelves. Feel free to restock as needed. Every effort will be made to price those items ahead of time. If an item is not priced, refer to a similar item in stock. If you are feeling ambitious, you can apply a price sticker using the pricing gun. We appreciate the help!

Product requests and suggestions: We are very interested in requests and suggestions. Please use the notebook in the store (on the desk behind the counter) to log information. NOTE: It is hard to keep up with demand for certain types of candy. Please encourage the students to buy what is in stock and tell them that items will be re-ordered shortly and/or once the remaining items are sold (i.e. cinnamon Tic Tacs).

Returns and Exchanges: Within reason, we will accept exchanges for items that are broken, didn’t fit, etc. Beyond those types of reasons, please discourage exchanges. Returns are not allowed.
